SMBL Sensor on jettie

More time at sea

From the idea to the product

Andy Damnig has been a passionate skipper since his youth. His own 9.5 meter yacht is moored in Grossenbrode. From there he often sales on longer voyages along the German Baltic coast or to the sjælland islands near Denmark. Finding and booking berths during the voyage is a frequent annoyance.

“I waste too much time on this. Sometimes you need hours to get the harbourmaster on the phone. Or you have to arrive at the marina early in order to find a berth and obtain access to the infrastructure such as electricity, water, sanitary facilities and showers. Especially during the holidays and at the weekend, the harbourmasters have their hands full with keeping an eye on everything and managing the stress with all of the guest berths.”

The idea of Smart Marina Berth Logistics (SMBL) was born: a monitoring network for marina berths. Forty prototypes have since been installed at four marinas and are undergoing live testing. The first marina facilities will be equipped with the sensors at the beginning of the 2019 season.
